The Child Dental Benefit Schedule: Free Dental Treatment For Kids

Raising a family is expensive — especially when the kids need medical care. The out-of-pocket expenses of dental care can often result in children and other family members not getting the dental services they need.

Obviously, this is a problem. Luckily, Medicare offers the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) to provide dental services to children who need it.

Manor Lakes Dental Centre believes dental care is essentially for healthy growth and development. That’s why we’re happy to offer dental services under the CDBS for eligible children. Here are some important things you should know about this scheme:

CDBS: What Is IT?

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule is offered by Medicare to help families, children, and carers who already receive other benefits get the dental care they need.

The scheme provides eligible children up to $1000 each, which can be spent for all or part of an eligible service. The money is available to be spent over the space of 2 calendar years; any money not spent in the allotted time is lost, so it’s best to use it all.

Who Is Eligible For The CDBS Scheme?

The CDBS is available to children aged 2-17 years old. They or their parents, guardian, or approved care organisation must receive one of the following benefits:

  • Family Tax Benefit Part A
  • Carer Payment
  • Disability Support Pension
  • Parenting Payment
  • Special Benefit
  • Youth Allowance
  • Support under the Veterans’ Children Education Scheme (VCES) if the child is 16 years or older
  • Support under the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act Education and Training Scheme if the child is 16 or older

For example, a teenager on Youth Allowance might be able to get $1000 for their personal dental care; a family of four might get $2000 total.

What Services Are Covered Under The CDBS?

Manor Lakes Dental Centre offers the following services under the CDBS:

  • examinations
  • routine cleaning
  • repairing cracked teeth, fillings and root canals.

The scheme does not cover orthodontic treatment, dental work that needs to be done in hospital, or cosmetic dental procedures, and there is nothing we can do unfortunately.
